Winter Magic & Handmade Gifts from the Heart

It’s winter again—oh, what a magical time of the year. Icicles cling to the corners of water spouts, winds feel scissor-sharp on bare skin, and skies blush pink more than ever before. Everything about this season feels majestic.

I often meet nostalgia during this season. The smell of oranges calling out “It’s Christmas!”—as Santa Nicholas would almost always tuck oranges into our shiny boots. My mother’s beautiful voice singing while spending an entire afternoon making aww-mazing dishes. The laughter of tiny feet running off with yet another cookie.

There was play in the snow—making snow angels, waiting for snowflakes to land on skin, jackets, and sometimes even in our mouths. Building snowmen with freezing toes. The sound of fresh snow crunching beneath our feet. The best hot cocoa after ice skating, followed by laughter as we fell into a domino effect on the ice. Singing and caroling with friends and family, embracing it all with open hearts.

And most of all, the feeling of belonging. Of being seen and mattered. Of accepting yourself just as you are. During the Holiday Season, everything seemed to come together like a fairy tale. Everything was magical—indeed.

Creating Magic in Our Own Home

As an adult—and a mom now—far away from those traditions, I’ve learned to embrace new magical ways to keep them alive in our hearts, our stories, and our Holiday Season.

We cook and bake with our boys. We play carols and dance as we bring the Spirit of Christmas into our home. We tell stories of our ancestors, of traditions, and of the love shared during this special time of year. Our hearts are so full as, little by little, our boys learn, embrace, and crave the stories and goodies from our time.

Little Paintings, Big Meaning

Some traditions are old, and many are new. One of the most magical traditions we’ve created as a family is painting together.

Each little 4×6 canvas is created from the heart—where nature meets winter magic. Some feature snow-covered trees standing quietly in the cold, while others hold the gentle silhouette of the Nativity scene. While mom may be the one holding the brush, every member of our family participates—brainstorming ideas, choosing nuances, and helping write the personalized notes on the back of each canvas.

Every painting carries a piece of our souls.
